Better Late Than Never I Suppose

Since I no longer live on the internet 24/7(and don’t watch the news from when I did stay online all the time), I was a little late to the party when it comes to the current situation in Iran, not really paying attention to what’s going on. While I feel bad for being so late in helping, I’ve got a proxy set up in an OpenBSD virtual machine(for security) to hopefully help keep the lines of communication open for the those fighting for their freedom(or at leasy more than they have now) in Iran. I encourage my fellow geeks to help out, see here if you didn’t catch my twitter post. I highly recomend using a virtual machine if you plan to set up a proxy as the Irainian government isn’t going to take all this lying down.

Why Iran is Fighting for Democracy Today

While we many in the US an Britain support the Iranian people’s struggle for democracy, we shouldn’t forget that our own governments are the reason they have to struggle today. 1953 Iranian coup d’état – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Upgrades Done (Hopefully)

I just upgraded to the latest version of WordPress along with updating some plugins. A few bumps, but it should be working for the most part now. As always, let me know if you see anything odd.

Sun Jar – Neatorama

I once thought that sun tea made in a jar was really something, but how cool is storing sunlight in a jar? The Sun Jar is a regular Mason jar with solar cells, rechargeable batteries, and LED lights. It also has a light sensor, so it turns on automatically when darkness falls. And get this: they are completely sealed, with no switches, so you can even leave them outside as garden lights. Available in yellow, blue, or pink. Link -via the Presurfer

I <3 Idiots

I occasionally sell things online through various mediums(forums, craigslist, and this time, Google Base), and often times I get some crazy responses from people asking for free stuff, “Dude, I really need this, any chance I can get it for free” to a lot of offers to trade for game consoles and fourwheelers. When I was selling my 8GB iPod touch, I actually had one guy who wanted to trade me for his 16 iPod touch with a cracked screen. And of course low ball offers all around. I usally respond with some sort of concise version of “no”. From there I usually don’t hear back from them again, or might even get a quick “Cool, I had to try” back. Rarely I might get a serious offer from the person and once I did actually trade. Despite all these, the reply I got from a declined offer today is probably one of my favorites.

So I’m trying to sell my Nokia E71 I got back in March since I dumped AT&T in favor of Cincinnati Bell, thus I no longer have 3G on it, and honestly, a smart phone with no 3G is pretty lame. So I checked out eBay to see what some of the going rates are(though I don’t sell on eBay). They seem to be in the $200-$250 range, with some brave souls trying for the $270-$280 range. Normally I would aim squarly at the bottom of the heap, but I was feeling fiesty and aimed just above the middle at $230 on Google Base(listed in Google Products results) leaving the price negotiable.  So I get a message simply stating: “hi can you do the E71 for $175 ? :) ”. That’s $55 off the list price, nearly a 25% cut, and there are E71s on eBay at $175 with several bids a couple days left on the auction. Taking all that into consideration, I decide this guy is not a serious buyer and just wants a cheap phone. Since I’m not desparate to dump the phone, I have no reason to consider his offer to be of any merit, and respond with: “Not even close”. Twenty minutes later, I get back a great little wharrgarbl(you know this guy voted for McCain). Below is his entire reply(the “quoted” text) with my reply mixed in. However, I do have some decency and won’t divulge his email address.

> thats your lame rude answer…is that how you bargain ? you need to
> go back to school on how to
> talk to potential buyers. you are an asshole

Okay, this is just a comedy gold wharrgarbl. You seem to be personally offended that I didn’t accept you(actually quite offensive in itself) offer to give you almost 25% off the price. I’m apparently supposed to take you very low ball offer very seriously, because you seem to be entitled to this phone, even if you offer suggests you’re not a serious buyer(as does the smiley face in the original message). My response is actually quite accurate, because you weren’t even close to a respectable offer mark on this one. If you think you can find a nearly new E71 for under $200, good luck, you’ll need it. Hell, I would probably let this thing go for $200, but I’ve seen many for for more, so I was going for the extra pocket change. So if you would have said $200, I would have said it’s yours.

> you must be a little kid

This actually struck me as funny for two reasons. One, I’m picturing little kids with Nokia business oriented smart phones. I’m sure it keeps little Billy from being late to his very important meeting at the jungle gym. The second is that the statement itself is only something I can picture some 14 year old saying who thinks he’s so high and mightyabove the younger children.

> dont bother replying back as you are now blocked

Up until this point, I would have just dismissed you as an idiot and deleted your message, but this. This really took it up that extra notch to make it worthy of a response, and indeed worthy of even sharing. You blocked me. You blocked me for those three words. That’s awesome. Really, it is. I’m actually kind of proud of myself. Most people reserve blocking for spammers and the relative who keeps forwarding ”jokes” and pyramid schemes. I didn’t even have to get in a religious or political argument, I just had to refuse to consider a $55 discount for someone, obviously, as deserving as you. Of course there is also that certain naivety that when you block someone in email, you’re never going to hear back from them again. Back in 1995 when most people had that one email address from their ISP, that was true, but that GMail account isn’t even my primary address.

Thank you kind sir. I’ve actually had a long and stressful today at work, but your message has brightened up my day and given me a good laugh. For that, I commend you. Now go forth and try to pick up high end smart phones for next to nothing.

I’ve also taken off the negotioable tag and put the phone at $225.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a North Carolina State University student last week who was accused of creating a “monster” out of construction barrels and placing it on the side of the road.

Changing Plans… Again

A few months ago, I decided on how I was going to plan for my future. I was going to go back to school and get some some of the basics out of the way and when I got out of the Air Force I was going to finish up with a bachelors degree, probably in computer engineering. After one quarter, I’ve decided to make some changes. I’ve only been taking two classes, Physics I and Calculus II, and while neither class is exceedingly difficult, it’s been very hard to to try to find time for that while working full time and having a family. Realizing it’s only going to get worse once I really start my bachelor’s work, I’ve decided to change gears just a bit. I’m going to instead work on what may or may not be a worthless BS in computer science from an online school, while also getting what may be an equally useful certification in enterprise programming from Sinclair. This is of course in an effort to get some type of programming gig when I get out of the Air Force, but I might settle for some other IT job above a help desk position.

Speaking of the Air Force, it’s not completely a sure thing that’ll I get out right this minute. My wife and I would like to travel, so I’ve put in to try to get orders to Germany along with the surrounding area(Belgium and the Netherlands). So right now I’m waiting to see if that happens, though getting orders to a place we want to go is pretty much the only way I’ll stay in the Air Force. And of course if I stay in the extra 4 years to go overseas(I only put in for extended long tours to increase my chances), that means the Air Force pretty much becomes a career since I will have served 10 out of 20 years by the time I’m done on my overseas tour. If that happens, my wife and I have considered going to the other side of the world(Japan) afterwards for another 4 years, then go to where ever we want to retire for the last 6 years.

Now the whole going back to school for some sort of engineering degree(using my GI Bill after I get out) is still on the table, but more of a backup plan if the overseas assignment doesn’t go through and I have trouble getting a good job after I get out of the Air Force. As always, any comments or advice are greatly appreciated.

Sharitt.com E-Mail Addresses Now Active

Note: The following is probably uninteresting to non-relative and non-Sharitt relatives.

I’ve given up on trying to get around AT&T’s blocking of port 25 and since I’m not going to sprint for business class ISP hosting, I’ve decided to host the email for sharitt.com with Google(since it’s free). If you want a yourname@sharitt.com email address and haven’t gotten a notice of your new account, e-mail me. Once you have an account, you can see the mail at mail.sharitt.com, and it’s basically like GMail at that point(with the same POP and IMAP access if you want).
